The Learner initiates a bid for joint attention by shifting gaze.
Help the Learner use eye gaze to get Emma's attention in order to share interest in the safari animals. The lesson is designed to help the Learner a) look at an object of interest; b) shift gaze to get a communication partner's attention; and then, c) shift gaze back to the object of interest to draw her attention to that object. When the Learner fixes gaze on an animal, the animal goes into "Low Ready" mode (as described in the lesson above.) In this lesson, Emma's attention is initially not on the Learner. After the animal goes into low ready mode, the Learner must actively seek Emma's attention by looking at her. When the Learner looks at Emma, she looks up and asks "What is it?" At this point, the animal goes into "High Ready" mode (also described above.) This "High Ready" state is apparent to the Learner because of the quickened drum beat. The Learner needs to look at the animal again in order to draw Emma's attention to it. Then, the animal goes into a reward animation and Emma moves in and offers an encouraging comment.
